Why is it called a leap year? I know what a leap year is and it's purpose so no need to fill me in. It doesn't make sense to me why it is called that though. We aren't really leaping over anything. If anything, we're making the path longer.
(1) It's just a way for people to make up the extra quarter of a day, to make the calendar more accurate.
(2) There are several explanations but the most likely is because adding an extra day causes fixed festival days (like Christmas) to "leap" ahead one day in the week.
